Professor Nigel Morlet is a highly skilled ophthalmologist based in Midland, Perth, Western Australia. With over 20 years of experience, he has become a leading expert in corneal and refractive surgery, as well as oculoplastic surgery.
Prof Morlet completed his medical degree at the University of Western Australia in 1981. He then pursued specialised training in ophthalmology at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. In 1994, he obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College for Ophthalmologists and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. To further enhance his expertise in corneal and external diseases, he completed a Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and served as a lecturer at the Institute of Ophthalmology in London.
Upon returning to Perth, Prof Morlet was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Royal Perth Hospital. Currently, he performs surgeries at the Perth Eye Hospital and St John of God Subiaco Hospital. His extensive research in ophthalmic infections and drugs has resulted in various publications. He was also one of the pioneers in Australia to publish on Excimer Laser Refractive Surgery. Since 1993, he has written several papers on Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Notably, Prof Morlet's research expertise lies in Data Linkage and Registry population studies.
Acknowledging his contributions, Prof Morlet received the Royal College of Surgeons - Worshipful Company of Cutlers Prize for his work on Refractive Surgical Instrument Design. He holds three patents for phacoemulsification needle designs and has been awarded research grants of over $5,000,000.
In addition to his clinical work and research, Prof Morlet remains committed to education and is a Clinical Professor at the University of Western Australia's School of Population Health. He previously held the position of Adjunct Associate Professor at Curtin University Department of Public Health.
