Associate Professor Gregor Brown is a highly skilled and experienced physician gastroenterologist who has dedicated his career to improving patient outcomes in luminal gastroenterology. Currently serving as the Head of Endoscopy at The Alfred Hospital, he combines his public practice with a private gastroenterology practice in Melbourne.

A/Prof Brown's skills and knowledge span the endoscopic management of luminal gastrointestinal conditions, including interventional gastroscopy and colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, and balloon enteroscopy. He is passionate about quality endoscopy, especially colonoscopy, and regularly convenes and demonstrates at national workshops for the benefit of trainees and peers. His research interests include colonoscopic polypectomy, bowel preparation optimization, capsule endoscopy, and new treatments for coeliac disease.

A/Prof Brown began his journey in medicine at Melbourne University, where he obtained his Medical Degree. He then completed his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Gastroenterology at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He further honed his gastroenterology skills by obtaining a basic science PhD at Flinders University, Adelaide, and completing an Endoscopy Fellowship at St Mark’s Hospital, London.

In 2004, A/Prof Brown returned to The Royal Melbourne Hospital as a combined staff of the department of Gastroenterology and Colorectal Medicine and Genetics before becoming Head of Endoscopy at The Alfred in 2007. He has since been appointed as an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at Monash University. He is a member of the Clinical Working Group of the National Bowel Cancer Surveillance Program and the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in GI Endoscopy, as well as a member of the inaugural NETI Committee.

Throughout his career, A/Prof Brown has served in leadership roles for medical associations such as the Australian Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Association Executive (AGEA), including serving as Chair (2009-2013), and the Council of the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA; 2009-2013). He remains actively involved in colonoscopy training in Australia as one of the instigators and developers of the current National Endoscopy Training Initiative program.

A/Prof Brown is married with four children, and he remains dedicated to helping patients who are suffering from difficult colonoscopy, large and complex polyps, and medical conditions like coeliac disease, GI bleeding, and iron deficiency anaemia.
