Dr Betty Lai

Dr. Lai is an accomplished general, endocrine, and laparoscopic consultant surgeon, specialising in gallbladder surgery, open and laparoscopic hernia surgery, thyroid, parathyroid, and parotid surgery, and holds GESA accreditation for gastroscopy and colonoscopy. With her medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 2002 and surgical fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2011, she has furthered her specialty training as a general and endocrine surgeon. She has been appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in 2013, serving at The Northern Hospital, Epping and Werribee Mercy Hospital, Werribee. With a wide range of experience in treating surgical conditions, she has successfully performed hundreds of general surgical and endocrine cases such as gallbladder surgery, hernia surgery, thyroid, parathyroid, and parotid surgery.

Dr. Lai is dedicated to providing excellent patient care by ensuring prompt review and excellent communication to keep her patients informed. She is known for her commitment to teaching and has been appointed as the Head of Acute Surgery Unit at The Northern Hospital, Epping since 2015. This has enabled her to work closely with junior doctors and registrars, which has contributed to a valuable teaching program for local General Practitioners.

Dr. Lai is one of the few female surgeons in Melbourne. She has taken a keen interest in fostering good medical practices and providing specialized surgical services in the community. Her fluency in multiple languages, including written and spoken Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka, and Malay, has enabled Dr. Lai to provide her patients and colleagues with better medical care and more open lines of communication.
