Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia. It has a total land area of 3,259.8 km2, and it is home to 1,345,777 residents, based on the 2018 estimates of the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The metropolitan area of Adelaide has 19 local government areas made up of 421 suburbs.

Adelaide Botanic Garden This 51-hectare land first opened in 1857 and has been an essential part of the City of Adelaide. Several heritage structures are located in this massive area, like the 19th-century Victorian glasshouse called Palm House.

Adelaide Zoo The Adelaide Zoo is Australia’s second-oldest zoo, located just north of the city centre. Over 3,000 animals (native and exotic species) live in this facility. One of the popular enclosures in the zoo is the South-East Asia exhibit, where visitors could be up close to Sumatran tigers and orangutans.

History of Adelaide Before the arrival of the Europeans, the Kaurna tribe already inhabited the Adelaide area. They called the place “Tarndanyangga”, which means the place of the red kangaroo.

Around 1830, the British planned to create a new colony in South Australia for free people (not convicts), with Surveyor General William Light selecting Adelaide as the capital of the new settlement in Dec 1836.

The city was named after Queen Adelaide, wife of King George IV. Its first governor, Captain John Hindmarsh, landed in the area in 1838. Two years later, Adelaide was given a corporation, making it the first city in Australia to be incorporated. Around this time, Adelaide already had its first mayor and establishments like a hospital.

Within the 19th century, many important buildings were erected in Adelaide, such as a church, the now decommissioned Adelaide Gaol, Town Hall and Post Office.

By the 1900s, the city’s population grew to 162,000, with more establishments being built, like the Parliament House and Adelaide Airport.
