Meet Dr Sameer Karnam, a highly skilled Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Specialist at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. Dr Karnam completed his medical degree at The University of Adelaide, and later advanced training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine through three large metropolitan hospitals in Melbourne - the Alfred Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital and The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Throughout his training, he was the trainee representative on the Victorian branch of the Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand (TSANZ), reflecting his dedication to the field.
Dr Karnam has a diverse clinical practice, specialising in conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, diagnosing lung cancer, obstructive sleep apnoea and narcolepsy. He also performs procedures, such as bronchoscopy and EBUS-TBNA.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Karnam was a frontline worker, managing a team of doctors and nurses in caring for patients with COVID-19 on the dedicated COVID ward at Alfred Hospital. He continues to act as a GP educator, teaching junior doctors about the importance of recognising and managing respiratory and sleep disorders in the community.
In line with his patient-centred approach, Dr Karnam is dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality and tailored care to each of his patients. He is actively involved in research and has presented at both national and international conferences. His goal is to help patients make informed choices regarding their medical conditions, while providing comprehensive care.
