Dr John Mooney

Dr John Mooney is a Cardiologist based on the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. With a focus on evidence-based care and cardiac imaging, he specialises in aiding the diagnosis and management of a wide range of cardiac conditions.

Before pursuing his medical training, Dr Mooney worked as an intensive care nurse. This experience provided him with a valuable understanding of multidisciplinary teamwork, grassroots-level healthcare, the management of critically ill patients, and the importance of preventive medicine.

Currently, Dr Mooney serves as a staff specialist (Cardiologist) in the Central Coast Local Health District. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Rapid Access Chest Pain Service, a service that provides rapid, safe, and equitable care to patients with acute-onset chest pain following discharge from the emergency department. Drawing from his experience in chest pain services at Westmead Hospital and St Pauls Hospital in Vancouver, Dr Mooney has significantly contributed to reducing unnecessary admissions to the district. The service acts as a safety net for patients at risk, with approximately 5% of clinic attendees requiring revascularization due to underlying diseases. Moreover, he introduced Cardiac MRI imaging to the district and enhanced the Cardiac CT service, which has resulted in a substantial expansion in the number of scans performed, as well as the initiation of structural imaging in the area. Dr Mooney also spearheaded the establishment of the transesophageal echocardiogram service at Wyong Hospital, routinely reporting trans-thoracic echocardiograms for the district, and providing inpatient care.

Additionally, Dr Mooney holds a position at Macquarie University Hospital, where he contributes to advanced cardiac imaging, including Coronary and Structural CT, and Cardiac MRI. He is an integral part of the multidisciplinary structural heart team, which performs transcatheter procedures for aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valves, as well as atrial appendage closure. Furthermore, he is a member of the cardio-oncology team, which focuses on cardiac assessments for patients undergoing cancer treatment, with imaging playing a crucial role in the evaluation process.

Dr John Mooney completed his medical degree, Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery, at the University of Sydney in 2006. He went on to achieve a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Adult Medicine Division in 2015, further demonstrating his commitment to excellence in his field. In addition, Dr Mooney completed a research fellowship and PhD in clinical epidemiology at The George Institute for Global Health and the University of Sydney, where he focused on cardiovascular outcomes after non-cardiac surgery. His research was recognized with the McCaughey Research Entry Scholarship from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Dr Mooney has numerous published articles and has made significant contributions to major research undertakings, including his involvement in the VISION study, an international collaborative research project on peri and postoperative myocardial events.
