Dr Gregory Szto

Dr Gregory Szto is a highly accomplished cardiologist with a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to his patients. He is the Director of Cardiology at Peninsula Private Hospital, a leading facility known for its comprehensive diagnostic, emergency, and elective heart care services. In addition to his work at the hospital, he is part of a team of skilled cardiologists providing cardiac health care in Albury Wodonga.

Dr Szto graduated with first-class honors from Monash University before completing his internship and specialist training at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. He then went on to complete advanced coronary intervention training at St Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, USA. During his four-year tenure in the US, he gained extensive experience in various aspects of coronary stenting, including rotablator decalcification atherectomy and valvuloplasty, as well as peripheral arterial angiogram and renal, carotid, and iliac artery stenting.

Returning to Melbourne in 2000, Dr Szto initiated the coronary angioplasty service at Frankston Hospital and established the coronary angiography and stent service at Peninsula Private Hospital in 2003. As Director of Cardiology, he oversaw the introduction of a coronary care unit, an intensive care unit, and the introduction of open-heart coronary artery bypass and valve surgery at the hospital in 2012. In 2015, he led the introduction of keyhole aortic valve implantation, a minimally invasive procedure that offers treatment to patients deemed too high-risk for open heart surgery, and is now available to low and intermediate risk patients.

Dr Szto is a leading expert in all facets of functional assessment of the coronaries, and as an interventional cardiologist, he performs coronary angiograms and can proceed directly to angioplasty if required. He is also one of a select group of interventional cardiologists who can implant pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) for patients with sick sinus syndrome, arrhythmia, or heart failure, providing comprehensive care to his patients.

Dr Szto is committed to staying at the forefront of his field and offering his patients the latest treatments and technologies in cardiology. He is active in investigator-initiated and global multinational clinical research and has recruited many participants into clinical trials designed to offer new treatments and drug therapies in areas including hypertension, heart failure, high cholesterol, and acute coronary syndrome.
