History of Queanbeyan In 1838 Queanbeyan was proclaimed as a town, but the city's population was just 50. James Larmer had laid out the city's plan, which was the surveyor. In February 1885, Queanbeyan was proclaimed as a municipality. In 1887, the region was connected by rail when the Queanbeyan railway station was built. On 7th July 1972, Queanbeyan got the status of a city. Three years later, Queen's Bridge was opened, which helped ease the pressure away from the existing bridge. Today, there are several heritage-listed sites in Queanbeyan, including Hibernia Lodge, Rusten House, Christ Church, and Kawaree.
