Dr Ashutosh Hardikar, an esteemed Cardiothoracic Surgeon, currently serves as the Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Staff Specialist at the Royal Hobart Hospital. With a focus on aortic surgery, adult congenital surgery, bicuspid aortic valves, and thoracic surgical work, Dr Hardikar brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his role.
Dr Hardikar completed his degree in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery in India and subsequently worked as a lecturer in Mumbai. Following this, he embarked on a three-year fellowship in CT surgery in Adelaide before returning to India. There, he established a successful unit at Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, where he honed his skills and contributed to the advancement of cardiac care until 2008.
In March 2008, Dr Hardikar made the pivotal decision to relocate to Hobart, where he has been dedicated to leading the cardiothoracic surgery unit since 2015. He was instrumental in the establishment of another unit at Calvary Hospitals, Lenah Valley Campus, solidifying his commitment to improving cardiac services in the region.
Demonstrating his ongoing commitment to clinical excellence, Dr Hardikar is currently pursuing a Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Thomas Marwick at the University of Tasmania and Menzies Research Institute. His research focuses on studying bicuspid aortic valves and associated aortic pathology. In addition, he is responsible for the collection and maintenance of data for the Tasmanian registry of bicuspid aortic valves and aortic pathology, which is a crucial component of the globally recognized consortium, BAV-CON.
Dr Hardikar actively participates in professional development through workshops and training programs. He has attended prestigious workshops such as the minimally invasive MIDCAB surgery workshop in Mumbai, VATS training course in New Delhi, minimally invasive mitral surgery workshop in Leipzig, and Uniportal VATS workshop and training in Shanghai. Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for prominent publications including The Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, Heart, Lung and Circulation, and Heart: BMJ Publications.
His dedication to knowledge-sharing is further evidenced by his role as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Tasmania, which he has held since 2009. Dr Hardikar's contributions extend beyond clinical practice, and his commitment to research, teaching, and collaborative efforts continues to have a positive impact on the field of cardiothoracic surgery.
